Protesting NLC members attack Oyo civil servants
Some members of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Oyo State, on Tuesday, fulfilled their promise to resume their protest, which began on Monday to demand palliatives to cushion the economic hardship occasioned by fuel subsidy removal.
The protesting workers had on Monday locked the entrance to the state secretariat at Agodi in Ibadan, the state capital to press home their demands.
The workers, who demanded an upward review of pension allowances, and payment of salary deduction, among others, said on Monday that the protest would continue on Tuesday if the government failed to grant their demands.
On Tuesday, they stormed the secretariat again, descending on workers, who defied the directive to stay away from work.
A worker in the Ministry of Information and Orientation, Dare Olaniyan, told our correspondent that he was beaten by the protesters.
Olaniyan said, “I was beaten by some of the protesters, despite identifying myself as a worker.
“I came inside the secretariat to pick up my belongings in the office. All attempts to explain this to the protesters fell on deaf ears, as they launched an attack on me, for no just cause.”
But the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Security, Sunday Odukoya, a retired Commissioner of Police, who drive to the scene, berated the protesters for descending on workers.
Odukoya said, “Beating civil servants in the name of protest is against the law. You must desist from this act henceforth.”
